Williams & Yates move your household from the UK to Sweden by road, with the customs formalities handled for you. Your belongings travel under customs control into Sweden, are cleared by Swedish Customs, then delivered and placed in the rooms you choose.
England to Stockholm is well over a thousand miles by road, and drivers’ hours rules cap each day’s driving, so your coordinator will advise on timing.
For a full household, a vehicle dedicated to your belongings travels from your UK address to the Swedish one. On a road leg this long, our crews load heavy pieces against the bulkhead and strap each tier as they go. A part load can suit a smaller consignment, such as furnishing a second home.
Your coordinator is one named person who plans the survey, customs paperwork, crews and Swedish end, so you or your PA are never chasing three companies across two countries. We are FIDI/FAIM and Which? accredited and members of IAM, and our BAR membership carries its payment protection guarantee.
A household manager deals with the same coordinator, and a project manager can travel to Sweden to run the unpack with them. Belongings from more than one property can travel on the same move.
At the survey, in person or virtual, we complete the inventory, measure pieces for crating and plan storage. Our storage in London and Dunstable is containerised, temperature and humidity controlled, and fully inventoried. We have storage at your destination too.
At delivery, a debris clear unpack leaves everything on clear surfaces so you can organise cupboards your own way. A full white-glove unpack puts it all away and dresses the beds, ready for your first night.
Sculpture and statuary are measured at the survey, then wrapped and crated before loading, each in a case built in our in-house crating workshop from ISPM 15 compliant timber. We handle CITES paperwork for antiques made with materials from protected species.
Tullverket excludes alcohol and tobacco from the relief on personal belongings, so a wine collection goes on its own inventory of make, year, value and alcohol percentage. Our customs agent calculates the duties and taxes, and the wine travels separately in a temperature-controlled vehicle. See how we move wine collections.
We can transport a car as part of the move. Registering it is yours to arrange, and Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, sets out the import steps.

A road move typically leaves England on LeShuttle Freight from Folkestone to Calais or by ferry, then crosses Germany. One route runs through Denmark, often on the Scandlines freight ferry between Puttgarden and Rødby, then over the Øresund Bridge, which carries lorries, into Malmö. The other takes TT-Line’s freight ferry from Travemünde to Trelleborg.
Your coordinator chooses the route around your destination and ferry timetables. Our guide to moving house by sea, air or road compares the wider options.
Your goods leave the UK, enter the EU at the first port, then travel under customs control until Swedish Customs clears them, so the customs paperwork is planned alongside the route. Before a winter delivery, your coordinator will plan checks around snow and ice to ensure the final delivery runs smoothly.
Sweden grants relief from customs duty and VAT on personal belongings when you move your normal residence there from outside the EU, which since Brexit includes the UK. Tullverket, Swedish Customs, sets out the conditions:
Alcohol and tobacco are excluded, and vehicles have their own conditions. Tullverket also allows relief in advance if you confirm you will move within six months and provide a guarantee covering the duties and taxes. Many people time delivery to arrive just after them instead.
The residence decision comes first. British citizens who did not live in Sweden before 2021 must apply for a residence permit, and GOV.UK’s guidance on living in Sweden covers the options. Tullverket accepts a residence permit, a right of residence or the Swedish Tax Agency’s registration decision as proof of moving. On a move like this, the permit usually sets the date, so we pencil one in and confirm it once the permit is granted.
Your coordinator manages customs with our customs agent, and your part is usually signing the declaration. No VAT is paid at the border and reclaimed later, because the relief is claimed at clearance. As with our removals to Switzerland, the destination’s own relief shapes the move. HMRC’s Transfer of Residence relief only applies if you later return to the UK.
A removal lorry needs permission to stand where local traffic rules would otherwise stop it. Stockholm asks for a dispensation application at least a week ahead, granted only for a special reason, and Göteborgs Stad names a house move as one such reason. Your coordinator builds the permit into the plan. Both cities also run environmental zones for heavy vehicles, open only to lorries that meet Euro V, which our fleet does.
Central Östermalm and Södermalm are largely older apartment buildings, often around courtyards, with stairs or a compact lift and no guarantee a full-size lorry can stand at the door. In the villa suburbs of Djursholm and Lidingö, driveway width and turning space matter more than lifts. Gothenburg follows the same pattern on a smaller scale, with apartments in the centre and family homes in the suburbs. If needed, we can run smaller shuttle vehicles from the main lorry to the final destination address.
The survey records the tightest stair turn and where a lorry can park, so the crew brings the right equipment.
A home reached only by water changes the plan: ferry or barge timetables, vehicle length and weight limits, and who meets the crew on the far side. If your new home is on an island, tell us at the survey and we’ll make sure the rest runs smoothly.
When you are ready, arrange a tailored home survey. We also plan removals to Denmark, and our European removals cover routes across the continent.

Check for FIDI/FAIM accreditation and BAR membership with its payment protection guarantee. Ask who manages customs at both ends, whether you have one contract and one contact, and how fine art is crated. Williams & Yates hold both accreditations, and one coordinator manages your move throughout.
The removal itself is straightforward with a managed service. The harder step is residence: British citizens who did not live in Sweden before 2021 need a residence permit, as GOV.UK’s guidance on living in Sweden explains. Williams & Yates plan the removal once that decision is made.
Usually not on used household goods, if you qualify for Sweden’s relief. You must have lived outside the EU for a year, owned and used each item for six months, and intend to live in Sweden for at least a year. Alcohol, including wine, and tobacco remain dutiable.
In practice, yes. Swedish Customs asks for proof that you are moving, such as a residence permit, a right of residence or the Swedish Tax Agency’s registration decision. Advance clearance against a guarantee is possible, but many people find it simpler to book the removal once their permit is granted.
Often not, according to people who have made the move. Right-hand drive, headlight changes, winter tyres and a registration process that only starts after customs clearance put many off, each worth checking with the Swedish Transport Agency. Williams & Yates can transport a car, but registering it is yours.
