A recognised masterpiece, a significant piece of contemporary art, a carefully assembled private collection held with the same care a museum would afford it. Whatever the nature of your collection, the question of where and how it is stored is never a secondary consideration.
Williams & Yates provides fine art storage as a fully managed service for private collectors, art galleries, estates and institutions based in London and internationally. The value of a collection, both financial and personal, informs every decision we make about its care. We manage every aspect of the storage arrangement on your behalf, with complete confidentiality as standard, so your attention remains where it belongs.
No two collections are the same, and fine art storage is not a single solution. The right environment for a collection of works on paper or fine art photography differs considerably from that required for large-format canvases, bronze sculpture or lacquered furniture. Contemporary art in mixed media, antique ceramics and decorative objects each present their own storage requirements. What remains constant is the standard of care.
Williams & Yates provides access to purpose-built, climate-controlled storage facilities in the UK and internationally, with the appropriate environment selected based on the specific nature of your collection. Whether you hold a single significant work or an extensive private collection spanning multiple media and periods, our team identifies the right facility, agrees the right protocols and manages the arrangement from start to finish. You have a single point of contact throughout, and the safety of every work in your care remains our primary responsibility.

The journey to storage carries as much risk as the storage itself. Improper handling, inadequate packing or an unsuitable vehicle can cause damage that a perfectly controlled storage environment cannot undo. Our collection and transport service is designed to eliminate that risk from the outset.
Our team of specialist handlers collects works directly from your property, gallery or existing storage location. Each piece is assessed individually before packing begins. Where a work requires additional protection for transit, whether due to its fragility, format, dimensions or value, our craftsmen design and build a bespoke custom crate to specification in-house. Crates are constructed using archival-quality materials, lined and padded to the precise dimensions of each work, and engineered to protect against impact, vibration and environmental change throughout the journey to storage.
All transport is carried out using climate-controlled vehicles maintained and operated by our own team. Chain of custody documentation accompanies every movement, and nothing is loaded, transferred or unloaded without full authorisation. Works arrive at the storage facility in exactly the condition they left you.
Every facility we use is selected against rigorous criteria. The standards we apply reflect what collections of genuine value require, not what a commercial warehouse environment provides. Each storage arrangement is personalised to the collection, with specific protocols agreed for handling, access, condition reporting and any specialist requirements.
Temperature and relative humidity are maintained within the stable ranges required for long-term preservation. The air conditioning and climate management systems in our facilities monitor and adjust continuously. This is particularly important for works on canvas, panel, paper and fine art photography, where even minor fluctuations over time can cause irreversible structural change.
Advanced filtration systems remove particulates and pollutants from the storage environment throughout. For works on paper, photography and pieces with delicate surface finishes, airborne contamination is a genuine and often underestimated risk. Our facilities maintain the air quality standards that specialist collections demand.
24-hour monitored CCTV, access control and on-site security personnel are standard across the facilities we use. Strict chain of custody protocols govern every movement of a work. Anonymity and discretion are maintained throughout, and nothing moves without full authorisation and documentation.
Fire suppression is managed through inert gas systems, which protect works without the water or chemical damage that conventional suppression causes. Detection systems are tested and certified to the standards required by specialist insurers. The use of inert gas systems also reflects a considered approach to sustainability, avoiding chemical agents entirely.
Works in storage are held using bespoke racking systems and archival-quality materials, selected for each piece individually rather than applied uniformly. Fragile works, oversized canvases, sculpture, fine art photography and mixed-media collections each require a different configuration. For pieces that arrive in custom crates built by our team, those crates are retained in storage where appropriate, providing an additional layer of protection for the duration of the arrangement. Interior design and installation considerations are taken into account for works being prepared for return to a residence or a new property.
We maintain a detailed digital inventory of all stored works, with condition reports completed at intake and at agreed intervals throughout. Reports are available to clients, their advisors and their insurers at any time. Private viewing rooms are available at our UK facility for clients who wish to inspect, rotate or loan works during the storage period.
Many of our clients hold specialist fine art insurance through Lloyd’s syndicates or private art insurers. Those policies typically stipulate specific facility standards, condition reporting intervals and chain of custody requirements. Our storage and handling protocols are designed to meet those requirements, and our team liaises directly with your insurer or broker throughout the storage period. You are never required to act as an intermediary.
For clients whose collections are not currently insured to the standard appropriate for professional storage, we can discuss options as part of the onboarding process and introduce you to specialist art insurance providers where needed. Accurate valuation of stored works is an important part of ensuring coverage properly reflects the true value of what is being protected, and we work with trusted valuers and insurers to facilitate this where required.
For international collections, our team is well-versed in the documentation and compliance requirements that govern the movement of high-value works as part of international trade, including the use of customs bonded storage for works awaiting clearance.
Storage costs are tailored to each collection and arrangement. Pricing reflects the size and nature of the works to be stored, the facility location and type required, the duration of storage, and any additional services such as collection, custom crating, condition reporting or insurance liaison.
We do not publish standard rates, because the service we provide is not standard. Most clients find that a consultation is the clearest and most straightforward way to understand what an arrangement would involve and what it would cost. Our team is happy to talk through your requirements in as much or as little detail as you need, from ballpark costs to a complete quote.
Storage and moving are rarely separate considerations. Whether a collection needs to be relocated internationally, transferred between residences or moved to a new property while a client is between homes, Williams & Yates provides the same standard of care for the journey as we do for the storage itself.
Our fine art moving service covers every stage of the process, from specialist packing and bespoke custom crating through to climate-controlled transport, customs clearance and installation at the destination. For international consignments, our door to door air freight service integrates directly with our storage capability, ensuring works transported by air are transferred without any break in custody. Where a move follows on from a period of storage with us, the same team, the same vehicles and the same chain of custody apply throughout. There is no handover, no additional handling risk and no complexity passed to the client.
For clients planning an international relocation, our team is happy to discuss how storage and moving can be arranged as a single, coordinated service.

Fine art storage, managed properly, should be effortless. Your collection is held with the care it deserves, accessible when you need it and protected against every risk in the interim, wherever in the world that needs to be.

Contact usHow is fine art storage different from standard storage?
Standard storage facilities are built for volume and convenience, not for preservation. Fine art storage requires precisely controlled climate and humidity, specialist handling, advanced fire suppression and security infrastructure appropriate for high-value works. The long-term safety and condition of a collection depends on the environment it is held in, and a commercial warehouse cannot provide what a purpose-built fine art facility does.
What types of works do you store?
We store paintings, works on paper, fine art photography, sculpture, ceramics, contemporary art, furniture, decorative objects and mixed collections. If a work carries value, whether financial, historical or personal, it receives the same standard of care regardless of medium or provenance.
Do you provide custom crating for works being transported to storage?
Our craftsmen design and build custom crates in-house for any work requiring additional protection during transit. Each crate is constructed to the precise dimensions and requirements of the individual piece, using archival-quality materials throughout. Where appropriate, crates are retained in storage alongside the work for the duration of the arrangement.
Can you store a single piece or do you only work with full collections?
We work with clients storing a single significant work as readily as those with collections of considerable size. The same standards of care, handling and documentation apply regardless of how many pieces are involved.
How do I access my works while they are in storage?
Private viewing rooms are available at our UK facility for clients who wish to inspect, loan or rotate works. Access is coordinated through your dedicated point of contact and managed in accordance with the facility’s security protocols. For internationally stored works, access arrangements are confirmed at the point of storage.
Is my collection insured while in storage with Williams & Yates?
We work within the requirements of your existing fine art insurance policy wherever possible and liaise directly with your insurer or broker on your behalf. For clients without specialist cover in place, we can discuss appropriate options as part of the onboarding process.
Can Williams & Yates collect and deliver works internationally?
Our logistics capability extends across the UK, Europe and internationally, including air freight for time-sensitive or high-value consignments. We manage collection, custom crating, specialist packing, customs documentation and delivery as part of a fully coordinated service, with freight transport arranged to meet your timeline and insurance requirements.
What happens to my collection during a long-term relocation?
For clients between residences or managing an extended personal relocation, we hold collections for as long as required, with the same standards of care and documentation throughout. Works can be released in full or in part at any point, and delivered directly to a new address when you are ready.
