What Makes a Wine Collection a Specialist Move
Wine needs a steady temperature over time, and that is the one condition a general removals vehicle is not built to hold. Sustained warmth is what damages a collection, rather than the journey itself.
Cork is the other physical consideration. Heat well above ambient causes thermal expansion inside the bottle, which can push a cork or produce seepage even where the wine itself is unchanged. Bottles travel horizontally so the cork stays in contact with the wine and keeps its elasticity, the same principle that governs how a cellar is laid out in the first place.
A collection also concentrates a great deal of insured value into individual bottles, and much of that value rests on provenance, meaning a documented and unbroken record of how the wine has been kept. Once that record is broken, a claim cannot restore it.
Wine is also a regulated commodity in a way that almost nothing else in the house is. Furniture, artwork and personal effects generally move under one set of rules. Alcohol is carved out and treated separately at practically every border.
How Is a Wine Collection Kept at the Right Temperature in Transit
Williams & Yates move a wine collection in a separate, dedicated refrigerated vehicle rather than alongside the rest of your household goods. Red and white travel in distinct temperature zones within that vehicle, so each is held at its own transit temperature from collection through to delivery.
Most descriptions of moving wine stop at “climate-controlled”, which can mean anything from a genuinely regulated compartment to a lorry that happens to be insulated. A separate vehicle with two zones is a different proposition. Red and white are not held at the same temperature in a cellar, and there is no reason to hold them at the same temperature in transit.
Keeping the wine apart from the general consignment matters as much as the temperature itself. Household goods are loaded, unloaded and staged to a schedule built around the house rather than the cellar, and a dedicated vehicle takes your collection out of that sequence. The temperature then holds until the bottles are in place, not just until the vehicle arrives.
Occasionally the storage itself travels too. On a Mayfair and Surrey move into Zurich, the client’s large double wine fridge was too heavy and too big for the stairs at the destination property, so a glazier removed a window and an external elevator lifted it in through the opening. What Happens to Wine on an International Move
Wine sits outside Transfer of Residence relief. Whether you are moving into the UK or out of it, the scheme that allows used household goods to travel duty free carves alcohol out, so your cellar needs its own dutiable inventory. Williams & Yates prepare that inventory alongside the main consignment.
Singapore Customs states plainly that the import of intoxicating liquors by all persons, regardless of their status of transferring residence, will incur GST and duty. Switzerland, Australia and the United States each separate alcohol out from the general treatment given to used personal effects, and relocation industry guidance consistently reports that the UAE goes further still, requiring the importer to hold a personal alcohol licence before wine can be included in a household consignment at all.
In practice that means a second inventory. You complete an alcohol inventory form recording the make, the year, the alcohol percentage and the value of each wine. That form goes to our customs agent, who calculates the duties and taxes due, and your dedicated move coordinator carries it through the destination’s clearance process alongside the paperwork for the rest of the move. Switzerland shows why that single point of contact matters, as Swiss customs is notably exacting and the wine sits on a separate track from the household goods the whole way through.

What Happens to Your Wine Collection When It Arrives
The collection is delivered into your cellar, wine room or storage unit under the same temperature control it travelled in. Bottles are checked against the inventory as they are placed, so the documented record of the collection stays intact on the far side of the move.
If the destination is not ready, the wine does not have to sit and wait in transit conditions. It can be held in controlled storage, monitored around the clock, until the property is ready to receive it. Your coordinator will advise on timing.
