Moving your home to Luxembourg is a considered decision, and so is choosing who carries it out. Williams & Yates provide removals to Luxembourg for households and collections that need to be handled properly, from the first survey in the UK to the last piece placed in your new home. A dedicated move coordinator manages every stage, so you, your PA or your mobility team deal with one person throughout.
Arrange a tailored survey when you’re ready, and we’ll plan the move around your new home and your timings.
A move from the UK to Luxembourg crosses a customs border and, for many clients, ends in one of Europe’s more demanding cities to deliver into. The older streets of the Ville Haute are narrow, partly pedestrianised and closely controlled. Kirchberg, where many finance and EU institution staff settle, is a district of apartment buildings with managed entrances, shared lifts and house rules of their own. A generic mover tends to find this out on the day. We plan for it from the start.
Your dedicated move coordinator prepares your customs relief application, works out what access your Luxembourg address needs at street and building level, and arranges the crews, vehicles and crating around it. Where it helps, we can fly a project manager out to Luxembourg to oversee the crews and the unpack.
It all begins with a survey, in person or virtually. Your coordinator measures the pieces that need crating, notes anything that may not fit a lift or stairwell, and asks the questions about your new property that shape the plan. Building access, lift bookings and specialist handling are all settled before collection day.

Paintings, sculptures and statues are crated to specification in our in-house workshop, using the measurements taken at survey, so each crate is ready before collection. Every piece is crated and wrapped before it goes near the vehicle, and crates for international moves use certified timber that meets ISPM 15, the international standard for wood packaging. At delivery, pieces are uncrated in the rooms you choose and photographed as they come out, giving you a clear record that everything arrived as it left.
On one delivery in Geneva, several larger pieces would not fit the lift or the internal stairs. We arranged for a glazier to remove a window and hoisted the pieces in. Luxembourg City’s older buildings and Kirchberg’s apartment towers raise the same kind of question, and your coordinator looks for it at the survey so the answer is ready before the crates are.
Our FIDI/FAIM accreditation, the international removals industry’s highest standard, is part of why clients trust us with valued collections. If pieces need to wait in the UK before they travel, our fine art crating, handling and storage service keeps them secure until your home is ready.
Contact usTransfer-of-residence relief lets you bring used household goods and personal effects into Luxembourg free of customs duty and VAT when you move your normal residence there. You must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months and owned and used the goods for at least six months beforehand.
A move from the UK now counts as a move from a third country, which is why this relief matters. Luxembourg’s official guidance on declaring personal property to customs sets out the conditions in full.
The relief is tied to transferring your normal residence, so furnishing a holiday or second home is treated differently. Non-consumable items must have been used at your former home, and new items still in their original, unopened packaging do not qualify.
You can make the declaration up to six months before you move, with a formal commitment, and your goods can arrive in stages within 12 months of your change of residence. For 12 months after import, goods brought in under the relief cannot be sold, lent, leased or pledged without notifying customs.
Alcohol and tobacco sit outside the relief and are subject to duty. A wine collection is listed on its own inventory, giving the make, year, value and alcohol percentage of each wine, which you can complete yourself or one of our crew can complete for you on request. Our customs agent then calculates the duties and taxes due, and the wine travels separately in a temperature-controlled vehicle.
Your coordinator manages this end to end, preparing the inventory, gathering the supporting documents your circumstances call for and advising on timing, so the paperwork matches the consignment when it arrives. The approach mirrors our customs-led removals to Switzerland, another route where transfer-of-residence relief shapes the whole move.

Luxembourg is divided into communes, its local municipalities, roughly the equivalent of a UK council. Your commune handles your residence registration, and in Luxembourg City it also controls how the street outside your new home can be used on moving day. Both need planning well before the vehicle leaves the UK.
Since Brexit, UK nationals moving to Luxembourg generally fall under the rules for non-EU nationals. Guichet.lu’s guidance on declaring your arrival at the commune gives that group a much shorter deadline than EU citizens, of three days from arrival for stays over three months. GOV.UK’s guide to living in Luxembourg covers the visa and residence permit side, and your coordinator schedules delivery with these dates in view.
To place a removal vehicle, furniture lift or crane on a public street in Luxembourg City, the city’s traffic department must grant permission. In the Ville Haute, vehicle access to the pedestrian zone is limited to set delivery windows and some central streets restrict loading to the morning. Temporary access permits are available for house moves. Your coordinator builds the permit, signage and timings into the plan, so the vehicle arrives to a clear space.
In Kirchberg, the questions are usually inside the building. Apartment buildings there often have building management to agree the move with, a lift to book and protect, and set times for deliveries. Your coordinator raises these with building management in advance and checks larger pieces against lift and doorway dimensions at the survey.
For a full household, a dedicated vehicle travels from your UK home to your Luxembourg address carrying only your belongings. Smaller consignments, such as a single apartment’s contents or the first stage of a phased move, can go on our European part-load service, sharing space on a vehicle with the same packing and care. Your coordinator will recommend the right option at survey and advise on timing.
If your Luxembourg property isn’t ready when you leave the UK, our secure UK storage in London and Dunstable holds your belongings between homes. It is containerised, temperature and humidity controlled, and fully inventoried. We plan storage at the survey rather than leaving it to the last minute. Storage at your destination is available too, if that suits the timing better.
Pets and vehicles can travel as part of the same move. Each has its own requirements for entering Luxembourg, and your coordinator plans them alongside the household consignment so everything arrives in the right order.
Luxembourg is one of many European routes we cover, alongside our regular removals to France. When you’re ready to talk through your move, arrange a tailored survey with our team.
A managed move to Luxembourg starts with a survey of your home, in person or virtually. Your coordinator then prepares the transfer-of-residence customs relief application, plans street and building access at your Luxembourg address, and arranges crating, packing and transport. At delivery, the crew places everything in your chosen rooms, with unpacking and a full settling-in service available.
There is no single answer. Many people find moving their furniture worthwhile, particularly when an employer is funding the relocation, while others prefer to buy new and factor in the choice and cost of furniture locally. It depends on the volume and value of what you own, which a survey with your coordinator helps you weigh up.
Yes. Moving from the UK to Luxembourg is a well-established route. UK nationals arriving now need the appropriate visa or residence permit and must register with their commune, as GOV.UK’s guidance for UK nationals in Luxembourg explains. That is separate from customs relief, which covers your household goods rather than your right to live there.
