1. Introduction
At Williams & Yates, we recognise that sustainability is a vital part of being a responsible, forward-thinking business. As a high-end removals and storage company, we are committed to minimising our environmental impact, operating efficiently, and delivering long-term value for our clients, community, and the planet.
Our values of responsibility, excellence, and innovation drive our decisions as we work towards embedding sustainability into every aspect of our operations.
While external dependencies in our sector—such as freight shipping and the development of long-range electric HGVs—currently limit our ability to commit to Net Zero, we are actively aligning ourselves with industry progress and are working toward a long-term ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
2. Key Sustainability Commitments
Transport & Fleet
• We operate a fully Euro 6-compliant vehicle fleet and have phased out all Euro 5 vehicles.
• All vehicles operating in London comply with Direct Vision Standard (DVS) regulations.
• In 2025, we introduced an electric surveyor’s van for property surveys in London.
• We have ordered two electric Luton box vans arriving in October 2025.
• All maintenance is carried out under manufacturer RM (roadside maintenance) contracts to ensure vehicle efficiency and longevity.
• Further investment in electric and low-emission vehicles is planned as technology evolves.
Energy & Facilities
• Our main warehouse is equipped with solar panels generating a proportion of our electricity onsite.
• We are transitioning to a 100% renewable electricity supplier in 2025.
• All depots are insulated and fitted with motion-activated LED lighting to reduce energy consumption.
• We actively monitor and track energy use to inform our energy efficiency targets.
Packaging & Waste
• We have completely phased out Furniguard (plastic) wrap in favour of six-ply paper export wrap.
• We no longer use bubble wrap, opting instead for fully recyclable packing paper and cardboard.
• We aim to transition from PVC to paper-based packing tape, with trials underway.
• We operate an industrial cardboard baler and all baled cardboard is sent for recycling.
• In 2025/26, we will introduce a used box resale initiative, allowing boxes unsuitable for export to be reused locally.
Materials & Supply Chain
• We work with packaging suppliers who are FSC-certified, ensuring materials come from responsibly managed forests.
• We are committed to increasing our use of recycled, recyclable, and reusable materials throughout our supply chain.
3. People & Community
While our greatest environmental impact stems from vehicles and packaging, we also believe in fostering a culture of sustainability:
• We are planning to introduce staff sustainability training and awareness briefings.
• A cycle-to-work scheme is under review for 2025/26 to encourage low-carbon commuting.
• We support the community through:
• Hosting a public defibrillator, listed with NHS 999 services.
• Employing qualified mental health first aiders.
• Participating in local charity initiatives.
4. Governance & Future Goals
• We actively track our energy use and vehicle performance to inform sustainability improvements.
• Although we have not yet committed to formal ESG reporting, we are exploring future alignment with ISO 14001 as part of our longer-term strategy.
• Our 2050 Net Zero ambition is conditional on parallel changes in key sectors such as shipping and heavy vehicle manufacturing.
5. Policy Oversight
This policy is reviewed annually by the Williams & Yates senior leadership team and will be updated as our sustainability journey evolves.
